Designed by Western Australia's Graham Marsh with Ross Watson, the Vines is a magnificent 36 hole championship layout that combines the very best of member privacy and comfort with a five star resort facility for visitors, set in the tranquil Swan Valley about 30 minutes from Perth. Native birdlife, flora and fauna abound. Originally consisting of three nines, Ellenbrook, Wildflower and Lakes, nine additional holes (3 to 11) were incorporated into the Ellenbrook course to create two entirely separate 18s. At any time, one course is reserved for members only, with public play available on the other course.
When a major tournament such as the Heineken Classic is staged, a composite 18 is played. Both courses feature superbly conditioned couch fairways with gentle undulation and strategic bunkering, mounds and hollows. Water is in play on several holes. The huge bent grass greens can be extremely fast. The Ellenbrook Course winds through tall stands of Australian Eucalyptus along the banks of the beautiful Ellen Brook. The Lakes Course commences with the original Wildflower nine holes which are a picture of colour during spring, with large undulating greens set in picturesque Australian bushland. The final nine holes provide a spectacular finish to the Heineken Classic as they meander through gently undulating natural bushland and culminate in three dramatic lakes around the Resort Centre.
The 16th, 174 metres, is a par-three with a 50-metre long green hard up against a lake on the right so that a cut shot will end up in the water. Less difficult tees are positioned farther to the left, which takes out some of the water hazard. The 369 metre 17th puts pressure on from the start because water threatens from the left. The conservative approach is to use a one-iron from the tee and aim just left of bunkers on the right because there is no more than 40 metres between the bunkers and a slope down to the water. Anyone who reaches for the driver and hits accurately will be rewarded with a relatively short shot to a big elevated green with bunkers left and right. Correct club selection for this approach is paramount The 451 metre 18th is the piece de resistance. There is water the full length down the left, a lake in front of the green and another off to the right. The green can be reached in two if you can produce a big drive right to carry fairway bunkers on the right and down on to a plateau. The sensible way is to lay up for two in front of the lake or aim left or right of the lake, depending on the pin placement.
